Key topics:  Passports  |  PNG VISA  |  PNG Hotel Address  |  Applying for a VISA

International Passport

International passport
A valid passport is required by all foreigners traveling to PNG with at least 6 months left before expiry. You will need your passport when you fly over to PNG and must also carry it with you along the Kokoda Track in the unlikely case that you require urgent medical evacuation back to Australia (or another country).

Please bring with you a photocopy of the main information page of your passport with your photo and other details are located. Carry an extra passport photo in case you need to request a new one. This is to be kept with you in case your passport is misplaced. It is a lot easier to have this document with you when dealing with embassy staff in PNG. Keep these additional documents separate from your passport.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) online passport services has detailed information about renewing or applying for a new passport. Visit their website at: DFAT Passport Website

Papua New Guinea Travel Visa

All visitors to PNG require a tourist visa, which is valid for 60 days. You will need a valid passport, proof of an onward airline ticket with confirmed bookings. This can be done directly with the PNG Consulate or through your travel agent.

For Australian citizens, a visa should be obtained prior to arriving in PNG. The visa costs AUD $35 (as at June 2012) and takes approximately three days to process once received. Don't leave it until too late!

Visas are obtainable upon arrival but this is discouraged by PNG Immigration and No Roads Expeditions and can cause long delays at the airport. They DO NOT accept credit cards at PNG Customs in the airport. Departure tax is included in your international air ticket.

VISA Application - Hints and Tips
Please check the PNG embassy website for the latest advice and forms when applying for a VISA. The following hints and tips are to assist you in understanding what is required. Website with forms for Australian residents is located here: http://www.pngcanberra.org/
  • You will need to include a self-addressed envelope with full paid stamps for the return of your passport and VISA.
  • Your passport needs to go with your application to Canberra (for Australian residents) - consider registered post service etc..
  • Include a money order or bank cheque for the payment of the VISA addressed to "PNG High Commission, Canberra"
  • The destination address should be the hotel:  The Holiday Inn, Corner Waigani Driver & Wards Road Waigani.
  • Send your VISA application with at least a month to go before leaving to ensure it is processed and issues can be resolved if any.
  • Include a photocopy of your flight booking paperwork which includes the flight details for both your arrival and departure in  PNG.
  • A  passport size photograph is required with your VISA application.
  • Include a copy of your booking form from No Roads Expeditions as proof you are a Visitor on a tour package.
  • If there is a problem with your VISA application, the PNG embassy typically will contact you by phone to discuss the issues.
