Gifts for the Locals
Many of our trekkers want to give to local communities they pass through. However please be aware that many groups now pass through the villages and there is an over-abundance of gifts/trinkets being given to the kids.
Gifting is a personal choice and you are not under any obligation to do so.
We encourage giving gifts (they are always greatly appreciated) and recommend either:
As these things can weigh a fair bit, don't over-do it or you may not get to the villages to hand them out. ‘Doubling up’ of educational items by group members maximises the benefit of the gift. If each person was to bring five exercise books and ten biros/coloured pencils for example, this would benefit an entire class. Just imagine what a whole trekking group could do for some villages if they pooled together ideas in a coordinated way.
We discourage the handing out of balloons and the like as well as lollies. There really are no dental facilities for the villagers along the way.
The Kokoda Track Foundation has recommendations for gifts to schools and gifts of medicine. The link to this information is here.

- sports balls such as tennis, soccer or Australian rules balls (AFL, NRL etc..)
- educational equipment such as pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper (exercise books), chalk and small chalk boards
- solar powered calculators which are light and not expensive
